12. CURRENT: To Meat Or Not To Meat

In the last few weeks, all I have heard about is the impacts of eating meat. This started when my brother watched an documentary called 'Cowspiracy', followed by my colleague at work and then when visiting my lovely friend and her equally lovely boyfriend, they had both dramatically cut their meat consumption. So this got me thinking and re-evaluating what I eat and the impact of this. To be honest, at uni I never really ate much meat due to the cost but I'm actually not that bothered about it either. Since having a bit more money in my back pocket, I have increased my meat consumption and I regularly have it, especially if I am eating out (which is often!)
So I thought I would do a bit of research and these are some of the facts;
- Animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation
- Animal agriculture is responsible for 20 - 30% of all fresh water consumption in the world today
- 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of beef
- Livestock covers 45% of the earth's total land
- We could see fishless oceans by 2048
Like everyone, I am partial to a burger or a steak, BUT, doing the research has really made me think twice about the environmental impacts of meat. I understand that protein is a vital part of a diet, and I personally think it would be hard for me to completely cut it from my lifestyle all together. However, I think I am going to make a conscious effort to use substitutes such as korn and other protein sources. But after doing all this research, I am most definitely going to sit down with a cup of tea and watch 'Cowspiracy' whilst flicking through some veggie cook books.
